It has grown since I was a kid but I am sure that a lot of this still holds true. Growing up on a yishuv was a great experience for a kid, from a young age I could walk to a friends house on my own. I had both anglo and Israeli friends and we were always well integrated. There were busses to Jerusalem and so we could easily get there before we were old enough to drive. We could easily get rides to shilat or modiin as well. It was far enough that it was quiet but close enough that you could get anywhere. I really believe that it is a great place to raise kids.

But for newcomers not from certain neighborhoods in the States or not fitting the mold its less so. Precovid we could go to shul and no greetings or handshakes offered. After 6 years here we no longer try...we still don't feel part of the community. After surgery nobody offered help or a kind word... its like not being in the "in crowd" in high school.
Much more modern orthodox than what we hoped for, less dati leumi / torani than we wanted.
Many shiurim and volunteer opportunities for women who do not work, but for those few who do not so much.
Great place for kids to make friends, but for adults it can be lonely.
