Be'er Sheva is a fascinating and diverse city to live in. Each neighborhood has its own unique character, from the laid back alleyways of the student areas with plentiful pubs and cafes, to the unique Old City of Be'er Sheva with its Ottoman architecture and Bedouin shuk, to the newer upscale residential neighborhoods with large single family homes and parks. Demographically, Be'er Sheva is very diverse, with a lively mixture of secular and religious, old and young, veteran Israelis and immigrants. In my experience, what sets Be'er Sheva apart from large cities in central Israel is its grit and lack of "pose" - people are happy to be laid back and actually don't dream of moving to Tel Aviv. Lastly, Be'er Sheva's desert location means it has a blessed lack of humidity. Leaving the city in any direction, you meet the vast and beautiful desert almost immediately, which has almost unknown bicycle paths and are perfect for a nearby weekend adventure.
